White Maize Zea Mays Corn Bai Yu Mi
How to Plant White Corn 白玉米
Corn grows best when planted at the correct time.
Prized for their sugary sweet flavor and disease resistance, white corn (Zea mays) cultivars such as "Silver Queen" and "How Sweet It Is" feature prominently in many warm-season gardens. The plants require little hands-on upkeep apart from regular watering and feeding. However, the seeds must be planted correctly to perform their best. Timing and soil composition are the two most important aspects of planting white corn since both will affect the plants' growth and vigor. Proper spacing also plays a key role because it creates the ideal conditions for pollination, which will determine the number and quality of the ears.
1.Prepare a bed for the white corn two weeks after the last frost, or once the soil warms to a minimum of 65 F. Choose a sunny planting site with fast-draining, slightly acidic soil. Remove all weeds and debris from the soil.
2.Spread a 4-inch-thick layer of organic compost over the planting site. Work it into the soil to a 12-inch depth using a rotary tiller. Make several passes over the bed until the compost is fully integrate and soil is loose and aerated.
3.Water the bed to a 5-inch depth after amending the soil. Use a garden hose or a sprinkler system for larger areas. Let the water soak in overnight to settle the soil and eliminate any air pockets.
4.Mark out planting rows with the tip of a pointed hoe to use as a guideline for planting. Create at least four planting rows for each variety of white corn you want to grow. Make the rows as long as you would like and space them 36 inches apart. Planting corn in a block like this results in better pollination.
5.Poke a series of 1-inch-deep planting holes along the guideline. Space the holes 6 inches apart. Place one white corn seed in each planting hole and cover it with soil. Water the seeds to a 4-inch depth after planting.
6.Maintain constant moisture in the soil while the white corn seeds germinate. Water whenever the soil feels mostly dry in the top 1/2 inch. Avoid over watering, however, because white corn seeds succumb quickly to rot and fungi.
7.Watch for germination in four to seven days, but don't be surprised if it takes up to two weeks if you are growing certain sweet hybrid varieties. Thin the white corn seedlings to one every 12 inches after germination.
8.Plant a second block of white corn about a month after the first to ensure an abundant yield throughout the growing season. Wait one month before planting the second block so that the plants will bloom at different times and prevent cross-pollination.
If the soil is below 65 F at planting time, try covering it with a sheet of black horticultural plastic for several days to warm it up.
