How to Grow Red Cherry Radishes 红萝卜

Radishes are hearty and grow to maturity very quickly.
The radish is a fast-growing, hearty edible root vegetable that flourishes in a variety of growing environments. As long as they are allowed full to partial sun and moist soil, these salad favorites will germinate and mature for harvesting quicker than many other types of vegetables--some varieties within two weeks. The Cherry Red radish, a spring hybrid, matures in approximately a month, producing small, round, deeply red radishes that hold their pungent flavor for up to two weeks in the fridge.

Radish - Cherry Belle - Raphanus sativus
Annual Cherry Belle radishes are round and bright, cherry red, 1" in diameter, with 2?"-3" tops. The flesh is crisp, firm, and white. It's a good keeper and can be planted all summer long. This variety is a fast maturing, early-season radish, best used immature in salads and condiments.

Soil & Water: Radishes prefer well-drained soil with plenty of added organic matter. They have low nutrient requirements; especially avoid excess nitrogen to promote good root development. Preferred soil pH is 6.0-7.0.

Planting & Growing: Cool weather is needed for best development. Sow seed directly wherever there is extra space in the garden. Radishes make good, living row markers for slower germinating crops like carrots.

Harvesting & Storage: Cherry Belle is used best when young and immature, less than 1" in diameter. They may keep 1-2 weeks in the refrigerator.

Did You Know? Radishes are a great source of vitamin C. From Holland, Cherry Belle is traditionally grown indoors or on soils high in organic matter.

Instructions
1.Choose a spot for your Cherry Red radishes that has good drainage and that gets at least partial sun, but is protected for the hottest part of the day.

2.Fertilize the soil for your radishes, using commercial fertilizer or weak compost tea.

3.Plant Cherry Red radish seeds outside as soon as the last frost has passed. Sow the seeds about ¼ inch deep and approximately 1 inch apart.

4.Give plants adequate water during their growing season. Soil should always stay slightly moist.

5.Thin seedlings when they are a few inches tall so that they stand 2 to 3 inches apart.

6.Check the maturity frequently by pulling up a radish and checking its progress. Cherry Reds mature in less than a month and should be harvested when the root systems are less than 1 inch long. Radishes that are allowed to over-mature become spongy, pithy and eventually develop root stalks that make them inedible.

Tips & Warnings
If your radishes begin to crack and split, it may be because you have waited too long to harvest them. They are still edible; however, their flavor may be too hot or pungent to enjoy.

Harvest the radish greens for eating as well as the red bulbs. However, store the greens and the bulbs separately after harvesting, as the greens will filter moisture away from the radish.

If exposed to direct, hot sun, radishes will "bolt," or go to seed, before they can mature into edible plants.
